The Composer: Owning the Song but Not the Sound

The Composer is Tier 3 of the IP Matrix: human-authored composition (melody, harmony, structure, arrangement decisions) performed or rendered by a machine into the final audio. Under U.S. copyright, the underlying musical work — the composition — is yours. The sound recording is not, or is only partially claimable, depending on how much human performance survived into the bounce.

This is the publishing-side tier. Songwriters who write the song and let a generative system produce the demo live here. The composition can be registered with a PRO, licensed for covers, and defended as literary-musical expression. The recording that carries it into the marketplace is the machine’s, or a hybrid the examiner will scrutinize.

What you own and what you don’t

You own the notes, the progression, the structure — the work that exists on paper and in the PRO database. You do not automatically own the master. If the audio is machine-generated end to end, the sound recording sits outside copyright protection for human authorship, the same trap as the Ghost, only narrower: the song is protected; the file is not.

Distribution follows the audio. A Composer track with machine-rendered stems inherits the platform AI label and the social-first ceiling that attaches to surviving synthetic audio. The publishing income can be real. The master-side streaming and sync path is constrained until the recording is human-performed.

When the Composer is the right tier

When the composition is the asset and the recording is temporary — demos, reference tracks, pitching tools, co-write sessions where the song needs to exist before the session does. Composer is also the honest home for songwriters who write fully and generate the guide vocal and bed while they wait for a singer and a band.

The upgrade path

Keep the composition. Re-perform the audio. The publishing claim survives; the master claim arrives. That move is the step from Composer into the higher Matrix tiers — ultimately The Bionic Virtuoso, where the song and the sound are both yours.
